Thoughts on minimum wage increases…

minwageI am just thinking aloud here, but my logic is telling me that minimum wage increases shouldn’t and don’t have the effect some people and organizations say will happen.

See…here is what raising minimum wage gets everyone, the middle class pays for it, as the salary changes made to accommodate for manpower will initially result in price hikes, but in efforts to minimize client/customer impact, all middle positions will be the first ones hit as those are the easiest to justify. The $5 extra you might get from a raised minimum wage doesnt magically come out of the decision maker’s profits. It doesn’t work that way. Businesses are there to make money, and the owners of those businesses are rarely there on behalf of all their employees.

More importantly, lets touch on the targeted demographic: minimum wage earners, which is specifically NOT the unemployed demographic, which everyone immediately assumes to be the primary beneficiary. Nope, what we’re talking about are the people that already have jobs, because the businesses will not restructure themselves with a goal of spending more money on labor. they will restructure themselves in a manner that minimizes the impact of increases in cost of labor.

This doesn’t help the poor in the least, it just makes 10% of the country less poor, and 30% of the country more poor as the impact of adjusted salary plans are engaged to accommodate for the hike in minimum wage.

Now, do I have your attention? Good. Here is what I think will make it worse. This disconnect in income differences further segregate wage earners from each other. This meas those that make more are further separated from those making less, initially this is only a change in wardrobe or car model, but over years it quickly develops into a very clear social distinction between groups that average less and/or more annual income. I am saying that it will exacerbate a social division already present. Inflation hits and the cycle repeats itself.

Now, I am not an economist, and this is all pure streaming thought with only cursory research, but seriously, how is raising the minimum wage by itself going to fix the poverty line?

Dancing in the right place…

I am going to preface this by saying it is incredibly obvious that some people haven’t seen the movie Footloose.

In a nation where our government continually shoves “freedom” down our throat, this is what happens.

Earlier yesterday Adam Kokesh and a number of others were detained when they chose to dance at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial…hell what am I saying…”detained” isn’t even adequate. At one point Kokesh was body slammed and choked. Another guy was forcibly pulled away from his wife while embraced with her.

So what was the right thing to do? Protest of course. Some people may mistakenly think this demonstration wasn’t necessary, but after seeing the result…I think it was absolutely necessary.

How many times does their local PD have to waste manpower because a law is simply not protecting the people. Laws restricting our freedoms should be taken seriously, but this? Seriously? THEY WERE DANCING!!!! I just have to say if I meet Mr. Kokesh, I’m buying him a drink. No one deserves to be handled like that when they aren’t presenting themselves as a danger to anyone. I am sure some local attorneys are going to have a field day with this because Kokesh apparently is running for office…and probably just pulled in a TON of votes, as the video above has gone viral.

Cheers People, and don’t ever let anyone tell you you can’t dance. 😉

Oops, almost forgot. Adam Kokesh’ website is HERE if you want more.

A thought on the Gulf.

I had this dream this morning…it was awesome. A murder mystery that was so deep and involved that it took everyone from CSI, Eleventh Hour, and Supernatural to stop the killer.

And it occurred to me. What the hell are all the other oil companies doing to help? Are they helping to dig these relief wells? Wouldn’t they be able to help with manpower?

There are so many people out of work right now that the oil companies are putting political pressure on lifting the moratorium before revisions to drilling safety policies are met out. In essence this would allow everyone to act as if NOTHING had ever happened. This little rant isn’t about who’s fault this is. Everyone laying this at the feet of the government needs to stop. This was caused by a company that has a proven track record for flat-out ignoring safety policies on drilling rigs. They cut corners and this is what they got for it…a woefully tragic event that will likely be killing most of the sea life in the gulf and beyond for years…not months.

Back to manpower. So…BP says the relief well is still more than a month out…but what if other oil companies are helping? I mean, Exxon probably want to get back to business right? the UAE has already offered their top people to come and help. Also, I cant help but think that the effort put forth could use some serious brainpower and manpower from ALL the oil companies, I mean…since BP is already footing the bill right? You want them to get on the ball? When they are having to pay their competitors to come in and help, I think maybe this would encourage some serious ass-kicking…anyone?

…anyhow that’s a thought and it just popped in my head and I wanted to voice it.
