Listening to Sam Harris…

…on his justification for ditching religion.

To be clear, I am NOT an atheist. Sam Harris is a rather outspoken one. I am quite the opposite. However I very firmly believe that most of the religions have evolved from a failed moral compass and device of social regulation, to an overgrown venue of business, extremism, and most importantly they represent a HUGE stubborn craze that refuses to allow the human social mechanism to evolve. Simply put, the wrong people are steering a moral compass that has been over-interpreted for hundreds of years, at the cost of millions of lives. This is not a factor of all religions, but those teaching intolerance on any scale are a part of the problem, and likely in thought and deed seek to continue this in order to maintain their own social-political structure within a population.

Please listen to him. He is not attacking your belief or spirituality. He is attacking its role in government and perceived social convention, whereby those beliefs are not able to tread on me and mine.

Morality is what we make of it. In relying on another to provide those decisions, a demonstration of example and trust would be a prerequisite. As Sam as put it, it is possible for us all to use morality in a logical model and prove clearly that some things are easily right or wrong. While these answers would easily be different for everyone, the sense of general right and wrong…without the religious compass, becomes very easily defined.

You see, spiritual grabs for power are just that. Grabs for power. In allowing someone else to direct your moral compass, you forfeit the value of your own (assumed learned) opinion. Why anyone would do this I have no idea. I think some people are actually afraid to think and act on this level. But once there, it is truly a learning experience.

Sam Harris has written a couple very thought-provoking books: The End of Faith and Letter to a Christian Nation. I am in the process of reading them both, but I can already recommend them.

Dear Brinker…

You took away one of my favorite places to hang & eat.

Your first Chili’s.

A couple years later, you make this big announcement:

Brinker is dropping $100M into Chili’s kitchens.

You…suck.

Your first Chili’s…what was once a conversation piece and social staple for everyone on upper Greenville Ave is now an eyesore.

But hey! You’re going to spend a gazillion dollars revamping your other stores…

Yes, I am a bitter bitter man about this. It’s been years and I still have to remind myself that restaurant is gone when considering someplace to go eat.

Love, Friends, Inspiration, and Tact – The Morning

Sometimes it’s a roller coaster day.
This a was a little streaming thought. Some insight into about 1% of the ramblings I endure in the morning. 😉 Enjoy…

Starting off with a groggy half asleep run, I realize the diet is truly working. I am going nuts brainstorming on how the hell I am ever going to get away from relying on a computer to make a living. I am looking not only for a way out for myself, but for my friends. I have some HUGE ideas regarding education reform, but that inspiration is so clean that I would never forgive myself for trying to actually profit from restructuring an education system, and all the powermongers currently making the decisions -they’d likely pay to have me 86’ed. I compare and contract regimens that work…and all of a sudden I come to the realization that if it weren’t for the bureaucracy and silliness inherent in our own federal and state education policy…our children could be sporting a graduate level education at age 20. What does this give us? A workforce saturated with doctors, thinkers, artisans, and ideas…a population entering the working world with vision and education.

…and then my groggy half asleep morning wake up is finished. I am angry that despite preaching the best of intentions, government fails miserably at finding a solution that will kick the problem. I’ve finished my shower and gotten dressed.

…on my way out to my car, I come to the understanding that we have some seriously untapped resources to use. Everyone in prison needs to be working, not working out. I could take ten inmates and build houses for a fraction of the cost of labor…*cough* far far cheaper than employing someone illegally *cough*.

…I am driving away from my complex and of course have to stop along side the same spot every morning…right next to the horde of abortion protesters…every morning. This morning I’ve figured something out…the protesters need to provide a SOLUTION to this problem, not scare the bejesus out of the kids. A suggestion for the solution? Easy, move to a place where people aren’t given freedom of choice to live their own lives and make their own decisions…I proceed to tell them what they should be doing. This is apparently something they don’t like and the car gets rushed. They don’t realize a police officer is watching and the whole lot of them get arrested for trespassing, unlawful demonstration, and public disturbance….gee…I never thought that might happen [evil grin #234].

…and I get to work – don’t even get me started on that.
